Its vineyards cover around 115,000
ha of for 11,000 estates. With an annual production of 6,000,000
hectolitres, this region supplies more than 750,000,000 standard-sized
bottles. The 57 appellations of Bordeaux are spread throughout
three main areas: Rive Gauche, Entre-deux-Mers and Rive Droite.
85 % of vines are red including Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet
Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdo and Carménère. The remaining
15 % of vines are white and include Sémillon, Sauvignon
Blanc or Gris and Muscadelle.
GRAVES: This region represents an
area of 3,500 ha in the southern part of the Rive Gauche (Left
Bank) with 360 estates, almost equivalent to 3% of Bordeaux wines.
The Graves appellation has a unique characteristic as it offers
crus classés in both reds and whites.
SAINT-EMILION: The only town in the
Bordeaux region to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage City list,
this appellation covers several villages and represents a total
area of 5,600 ha of the Rive Droite (Right Bank), equalling to
almost 5% of the size of the Bordeaux region.
